Improvement of Living Conditions and Future Prospects of Cambodian Children in Rural Areas

Results and Outlook

Expectations

•  Better access to elementary school (especially for girls) for school-aged children in covered villages

•  Increased community health awareness and a better capacity to take charge of health problems

•  Increased income and stability in targeted families

•  Improved living conditions for children whose families benefit from financial support

•  Improved breeding and cultivating techniques for better food security

•  Improved social conditions for children and young girls

•  Increased efficiency and credibility of local partners

Outlook

The results of internal and external assessments carried out in 2002 and 2003 show that the project has a direct incidence on durable development of civil society, reduction of poverty and child trafficking and a decrease in dangerous forms of child labour in stone quarries, brick plants or at the service of wealthy urban families.

The project continues and is spreading to new villages by reinforcing existing activities (including micro-credit) and introducing new, pertinent ones. An effort will also be made to systematically reinforce VDC skills to help guarantee continuity.
